Denver Neighborhoods: The Highlands

The Highlands

80211

Quite possibly one of the most popular neighborhoods in Denver right now, the Highlands is centrally located and littered with historic Denver squares, bungalows and painted ladies. It is a quintessential Denver neighborhood. Known to many natives as “The Northside”, the Highlands neighborhood has been broken into three different sub-neighborhoods known as Highland, West Highland, and most recently LoHi (Lower Highland).

Founded in 1858 by William Larimer Jr. (who also founded Denver City), the area overlooked Denver and Auraria. It remained mostly suburban for decades due to a separation caused by the rail yards and Platte River. However, this changed when the Denver Tramway Corporation streetcar line connected the neighborhood to the rest of the surrounding areas, including downtown Denver. Today, the Highlands is a highly sought after neighborhood amongst transplants and natives alike. With treelined streets, friendly neighbors, and a highly engaged community, whats not to love?
